I wrote once in my blog regarding Singapore's Competitive Edge in regards to Entrepreneurism close to 2 years ago.
Recently, the topic resurfaced when I was interviewed by Red Herring China Bureau Chief Kaiser Kuo. However, after milling over the topic, I guess my thoughts can be summed up into a few short points
First, we must make a distinct difference between what I consider local and international entrepreneurism
a) Local being things like starting a local business (such as a restaurant, a mini-mart and such, what are the chances of founding another Starbucks or Mcdonalds? my sentiments exactly)
b) International, needless to say is a company or an idea which can take the whole world by storm and going on to be World Recognized.
Singapore is laying down a great foundation for Entrepreneurs with numerous grants, help and promotion by the Government. However the key issue I think at work is that the culture in Singapore isn't there just yet. Look at Singapore's track record, aside from Creative Technologies, most of the other big companies in Singapore are Government Linked Corporations.
Whether Singapore will eventually be able to churn out more World Class companies I reckon is a tough shot. But hey, there are always folks like me working on stuff in the background.
