Two days back, I wrote about Thailand’s formal President Thaksin who is looking into buying a football club. I expect a lot of twists in this story since it involves various factors, Thailand’s political scene, Investors confidence in their economy, and ironically to a lesser extent, how it will affect Premiership soccer.
When Roman Abramovich picked up Chelsea football club on a spur. He not only shook up the scenes by spending huge amounts of money the likes which no other owners have spend before. He also make use of the opportunity to relocate to London and promptly set up base there. Thaksin is in a similar position as he has came out in an interview with the Financial Times , Ex-President Thaksin to sue Thai junta over assets. I believe Thaksin will definitely not be heading back to Thailand for the trial and will promptly wait it out to see the outcome. After all, once he goes back, things would just get nasty real quick as Thaksin still has a rather sizable fervent supporters back in Thailand.
Thailand as a nation too is making a very tough choice, by going after Thaksin, they are showing resolve to right an “abuse of power”. Yet at the same time, to arrive at this step, much sleep must have being loosed over whether this will raise a political storm which could have being avoided. Truly a brave decision.
As for Thaksin, by choosing to wait it out, it might seem like the best tactic for now, however the outcome is hard to judge, still it should at least avert any potential economic and political fallout in Thailand for the time-being. Thailand as we all know was the origin of the 1997 Asian crisis.
